Integrated Life Inspiration

We were heading out to a Spurs game on December 5, 2008 when I heard the joyous and reality-altering news that I would be a father!

Until then, I had been living large and mostly carefree—Vegas parties and all. I was at a high point in my career. To an outside observer, I appeared to be living the good life. Truth is I was rich on paper, poor in life. This was life’s second domino, warning me after the Playboy Club bet. However, this one gave me a deadline to get my overall life in order.

Unfortunately, I had also packed on pounds despite eating somewhat healthy. I knew drinking-while-partying was the culprit of the 32-pound “fireman’s torso weight suit” I was wearing 24/7. I was busy all the time and knew it was not a life to bring a child into. I was determined not to allow my business to be my “favorite child.” I was determined to spend time with my son and to have the energy to play and keep up with him.

I was an only child, so family—even a self-created sense of family—is very important to me. Before my son Jayden came along, my close friends had been my brothers and sisters. They still are. I also have half a dozen friends from elementary school whom I consider “family.” They can call me anytime day or night and I’ll be there for them. I have added others to this “family” along the way. Still, at times I was giving more than I was receiving, and it caused cash-flow problems.

The online advertising crash of 2008, coupled with my tendency to support people through their tough times, nearly cratered my business. There was more going out than coming in each month. Instead of making tough decisions and cuts to weather the economic storm, I burned through all the company savings. Then I compounded my mistake by also burning through all my personal savings in an attempt to keep the company operating in an economic environment that no longer existed. Stress and a mountain of other issues were crushing me.

This is when I started thinking about the people and activities in my life from an energy standpoint. Did this person or activity bring my energy up? Or, did it bring my energy down? When only one side is giving on a continual basis, it drains energy and profitability. In contrast, when both sides are committed to the mutual achievement of goals, energy and profitability increase exponentially. Learning this, albeit the hard way, was a big aha moment for me.

I focused on my health and developed what would become the health pillar of the Integrated Life Formula. I began spending more time with mutual energy creators, which left no time for “energy vampires.” I have now attracted a fantastic group of friends and business mentors who I am 100 percent certain I could call on to be there for me just as I would be for them.

The impending arrival of my son motivated me to action on all fronts. I became much more serious about taking the necessary steps in my life to have overall prosperity, not just business and financial prosperity. I started thinking about where I wanted my life to go. This got me thinking about deep topics such as my life’s vision and the spiritual aspects that provided its undercurrent of meaning. So many times in my life, I had felt like an observer, watching my own life as one watches a movie. I wanted to be driving the car that was my life instead of standing on the curb watching someone else in the driver’s seat, passing me by in my car!

With fewer than nine months to go, I immediately set about building my team and processes to unshackle me from my business. I had resolved that I was going to spend the first six months of my son’s life on sabbatical, completely devoted to him.

I kept my promise to myself and learned valuable and unforeseen lessons, both gratifying and unsettling, in the process. I am thankful to my team and advisers for keeping our multimillion-dollar business running during the six months I was away.

It had been running, but it had not been running on all cylinders. I thought I had put excellent systems and a top-notch team into place. However, once I got actively involved in my business again, I realized my perception had not been reality. Fortunately, I was able to reassess my previous judgments and processes, and repair and rebuild from a platform of enlightened understanding.

These events and experiences were the building blocks that would become the Integrated Life Formula I use in my own life. I have always felt a calling to be a mentor to others. I realized how much advice and help I had given to so many companies in the online advertising space because I believe we live in a world of abundance. Many of these companies were potential competitors, but I saw something in them. I gave a ton of my time and even tested their technology to help them get off the ground.

Once I created and lived this system, I wanted to help others. I am passionate about coaching other entrepreneurs on how to put this system to use in their lives. You can’t get to freedom without a lot of hard work in the beginning—unless you win the lottery or are a trust-fund baby.
